South East Melbourne Phoenix entered the National Basketball League in the 2019-20 season as part of the NBL expansion, and by their second season had secured a spot in the semi-finals.
Their debut match, the first-ever ‘Throwdown’ clash, set the scene for a healthy cross-town rivalry with Melbourne United that continues into the present season.
South East Melbourne Phoenix won 91-88 in front of a sold-out crowd at John Cain Arena, where both teams play the majority of their home games.
The team’s first official home game at John Cain Arena resulted in another victory, with the Brisbane Bullets defeated 113-93.
