FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers

Don’t miss your chance to see the Australian Boomers at John Cain Arena as they take on China and Japan in FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers!

This is your only opportunity to see the reigning Olympic bronze medalists in Melbourne as they play to qualify for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Chinese Taipei will also be part of this qualifying window and will play games against Japan and China.

Thursday 30 June

  • Gates Open: 5:30pm
  • Australia vs China: 6:30pm
  • Event Concludes: Approx. 8:30pm

Friday 1 July

  • Gates Open: 4:00pm
  • China vs Chinese Tapei: 5:00pm
  • Japan vs Australia: 7:30pm
  • Event Concludes: Approx. 9:30pm

Sunday 3 July

  • Gates Open: 3:00pm
  • Japan vs Chinese Tapei: 4:00pm
  • China vs Australia: 6:30pm
  • Event Concludes: Approx. 8:30pm

Monday 4 July

  • Gates Open: 5:30pm
  • Chinese Tapei vs China: 6:30pm
  • Event Concludes: Approx. 8:30pm
Important Event Information
  • We strongly recommend pre-booking your parking. Bookings close at midnight the night before the event. Drive-up spaces are limited and subject to availability.
  • Buses replace trains on sections of the Sandringham, Frankston, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines from Friday 1 – Monday 4 July. Guests should plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
  • Any item or bag that is too large to fit under a seat is not permitted, and a limit of one bag per person applies. 
  • John Cain Arena has been instructed by FIBA that only national flags of the competing teams will be permitted to be displayed by guests. Other flags or items, including clothing, may not be permitted into the venue and will need to be cloaked prior to entry.
  • FIBA may prohibit any other banners, signs or flags at their discretion.
  • Basketball Australia prohibits the action of ‘courtsiding’ (or data streaming) live match information for any purpose.

About the fiba basketball world cup

Known as the FIBA World Championship from 1950 until 2010, the FIBA Basketball World Cup is the flagship event of the International Basketball Federation.

The first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup took place in Argentina in 1950 with the host nation prevailing in the Final against the USA.

Since the first staging of the tournament in Buenos Aires, where 10 teams did battle, the field has grown exponentially and grew to a record 32 national teams for the 2019 edition.
